Questions to Ask When Hiring a Bookkeeper

Hiring a bookkeeper can seem like a huge undertaking at first. However, once you know what to look for, asking the right questions and finding the right bookkeeper can be a breeze. Imagine all the saved time and money for your business!

Do you have any experience in the industry, any accreditations?

Experience is one of the most important characteristics to look for in a bookkeeper. Every bookkeeping job is different, so finding a bookkeeper with experience in your specific industry (restaurant, retail, etc) can be crucial to discovering the right fit for your business. They are able to identify specific trends, give you industry related tips and you can trust that they know how to do their job without as much guidance as someone without similar industry experience. Asking whether they have any industry experience is one of the most important questions you can ask to any potential bookkeeper candidates. Also, although having a license is not a requirement to be a bookkeeper, many of them will elect to get optional licensing or credentialing through an organization like the National Association of Certified Public Bookkeepers or The American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers. Look for a bookkeeper with an optional certification, it shows that they are motivated and seek out additional training even when not required.

How much do you communicate with your clients?

When choosing a bookkeeper, be aware of what your needs are for our small business in terms of the type of communication you expect. Some business owners like a large amount of communication – phone calls, reports, emails – while some would rather let the bookkeeper do their job and only communicate with them as needed. Keep in mind that a quality bookkeeper, especially one with industry experience, will more than likely have a wide variety of insight into the day to day activities of your business so one that is willing and able to communicate with you effectively is the best to help you grown. Why not take advantage of that knowledge via effective, frequent communication?

Do you have any client testimonials?

Due to the potentially sensitive nature of what a bookkeeper does, it’s very important to hire one that comes with client testimonials. As a bookkeeper has access to all aspects of your finances and business, speak with former clients about their confidentiality and character. Besides the experience, being able to find one that does their job efficiently as well as confidentiality is key to making sure you can trust them. Interviewing former clients and being able to ask them their thoughts on your potential bookkeepers, especially in relation to any specific questions or concerns you may have, can help you shed light on who may or may not be a good fit for your business.

When looking to hire a bookkeeper for your business, it is key to make sure to ask the right questions – do they have experience?
