Barbara Stitt

Barbara’s graphic art background greatly influences her work today.  Strong design, striking color combinations, use of pattern and texture with both representational and abstract themes characterize her paintings.  An “experimental” painter working in mixed media, she enjoys all subject matter that has meaning to her.  She has recently started to work with fabric and fiber.

An art major in college, she has also studied the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC and with Mary Todd Beam, Polly Hammett, Stephen Quiller, Katherine Liu, Carrie Brown and others.  She is a “member with excellence” of the South Carolina Watercolor Society and has won awards from Upstate Visual Arts, South Carolina State Fair, Anderson Art Center, South Carolina Watercolor Society, Georgia Watercolor Society National Show (best of show) and others. She has recently exhibited at the Greenwood Museum, City Art in Columbia SC, Foothills Gallery (Greenville SC) and galleries in Black Mountain NC, Brevard NC and Highlands NC.

Her work was recently featured twice on the cover of “Bella” Magazine in Greenville SC.

Her goal is to continue experimentation with new techniques and materials and in alternative and unique interpretations of her favorite subject matter.  She is a member of the South Carolina Watercolor Society, Upstate Visual Arts, Georgia Watercolor Society, Focus (Fiber Arts) and Studio South (Artworks by Carolina Women).  Her work is displayed at Sandpiper Gallery in Charleston SC, Southern Galleries in Simpsonville SC, Iago Gallery in Blowing Rock NC and by appointment at her studio.

Artist's Statement

My inspiration comes from  almost any subject matter that sparks my interest at the time and I  have always been fascinated by pattern, design, texture and color.  I enjoy working with these applications on various supports (paper, board, canvas, fabric etc.) in a random and spontaneous manner, then bringing the chaos into order. It is a very intuitive process inspired by what I see and feel about this underlying painting.

I hope to spark the interest of the viewer by offering a personal , unique and hopefully interesting  interpretation of subject matter which may be quite ordinary. The process of creating a painting, for me, is similar to solving a mystery which  must be brought to a believable conclusion.
